Refn’s Drive is a master course in how to layer a movie. It’s a frame perfect examination of a modern day Shane who’s been wrong so long, he can’t stop from doing more wrong, for all the right reasons. But what’s remarkable is how strange and twisted and somehow reasonable the Driver’s fantasies are. His propensity toward violence, unhealthy longing for familial bliss, and utter lack of social mores should repel us. But Ryan Gosling’s performance is so heartfelt, and the story is so beautifully structured, that we can’t help but connect deeply with a man that very well could be a psychopath.
